DANCE/MOVING TO MUSIC

The seated dance sessions began this week at both Trinity Theatre in Tunbridge Wells and the Oast Theatre in Tonbridge. The sessions are suitable for those who are living with dementia, diagnosed or not, carers, and any older person. Due to limited numbers because of social distancing, it's vital to book via the links below to secure a place, but places are still available.

Sessions will be held on Wednesdays at the Trinity Theatre from 11 am-12 noon and at the Oast Theatre from 2-3 pm. The links for booking each are below:

CALLING CARERS
The CARER'S PEER SUPPORT group which used to meet in Southborough and which was organised by the Alzheimers society was very beneficial to carers who wanted to get information that would help them in their caring role and to meet others in a similar situation. I plan to resurrect this carers group, hopefully, starting in Tonbridge in August, and will be open to ALL carers regardless of their cared-for person's medical condition. To begin with, it's likely to be a monthly group but could become twice monthly. I hope to be able to draw on professionals who will offer you advice about various subjects relevant to your caring role. Please let me know if this is something that would help you and what sort of information would be useful to you.

Please pass this on to any carers you may know. At the moment I need to judge interest and potential numbers. Comments and suggestions are welcome.email Chris Parker at: chrisparker002@icloud.com

The club has willing members who will be there to help and assist you. Even if you have never bowled before you will be made welcome. The club also has a restaurant that is open 6 days a week for lunches and a well-stocked bar. If you are interested please contact the club on 01732 771200 or email angeloffice@angelibc.co.uk

Hot off the press: Aducanumab – a new drug treatment being made available in the US

The Food and Drug Administration in the US announced that it had approved the use of the drug aducanumab. The drug, developed by US pharmaceutical company Biogen, is the first to be approved in the US for nearly 20 years.

The US regulator has approved the drug via its Accelerated Approval Pathway. While clinical trials gave some mixed results, the anticipated benefits are granted more significance in light of the fact that treatments for Alzheimer’s disease is so desperately lacking. For people in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease, aducanumab helped to prevent the build-up of the amyloid protein, slowing cognitive decline. For the people who showed positive results, this meant they were better able to travel independently, perform household chores, and manage their finances.

Dr Richard Oakley, Head of Research at Alzheimer’s Society said:
‘This is just the beginning of the road to new treatments for Alzheimer’s disease. As this drug will only benefit a proportion of people in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease, there are hundreds of thousands more who may not be eligible. We must keep searching for drugs for all stages of Alzheimer’s disease and for other types of dementia.’
